Join us for an oil painting demonstration with talented artist John Holdway. John will begin his discussion with under-painting techniques and how to choose pigments and mediums. John's main focus will be on layering methods and mastering control of opacity and transparency within your oil painting. John is a proponent of depicting realism, however, the techniques he'll use could be applied to a variety of other painting styles. Many oil painters have moved to non-toxic materials and methods and John will speak to these as well.

Free Drawing Demo

I am getting ready for my class to start next Monday. I made a post about the class in a previous post (here is a link to that post)  There is still room to join if you are interested. I did a free, although short, demo at Oasis yesterday. Here is the drawing of a gourd I did in an hour. I used pencil and was able to add a little watercolor at the end. There was a great turn out. Lots of people with great questions. 

Robert Canaga Studio

I went to Robert Canaga's Studio today. He generously walked me and a couple other visitors through the Solar Plate printmaking process. I have been wanting to do solar printing and now I feel confident to finally give it a try.

I took a series of photos of Robert printing a plate from his current Vinyard Series. I was impressed that he is able to produce his prints solvent free.

Here is a painting of an avocado that I am finishing up.

Scientific illustration

Here is a link to an illustration I did for a scientific article. It shows the spines on neurons of zebra finches as the father is teaching the juvenile the song. Scientists are able to view the spines and how they change while the birds learns songs. They can do this by creating viruses that are engineered so they will attach to the spines and become florescent. The images that they have are remarkable but difficult to understand. The images themselves look like green blobs. A scientist had to explain with diagrams what I was seeing and show me the changes over time. After I gained some insight into what I was seeing I was able to create the image.
