Shrines and Reliquaries
This is a picture of the piece I did for the Shrines and Reliquaries show at the Arts Center in Corvallis. This piece has a stump sculpted from polymer and painted then mounted on a base that uses techniques common in architectural or scale-railroad models. I used metal leaf gilding on the frame of the painting. There is a topo map lining the inside of the box. There are sewn cloth banners on the doors. I made the box from fir and it has a handle made of nylon rope and stitched leather.
I titled it Logger Priest's Portable Shrine. The idea comes from having heard of loggers who believe and feel that trees have a living spirit as we do ourselves. Each time a tree is cut the spirit is honored for its sacrifice. My contribution to the Shrines and Reliquaries show honors the spiritual connection of loggers to the forest. Borrowing the visual language of shrines in Christian art combined with the utilitarian tools of the logger I have created my own vision of a shrine that focuses the spirit of reverence for the forest. I am very sensitive to the environmental movement and feel a strain in the natural polarization of opinion on the subject. I see the concept of the tree harvester as priest a powerful Utopian notion. The weight of the sacrifice is carried by the one performing the sacrifice. And so entrusted by society to the sacred duty of providing wood while protecting the forest.

The Journey Begins

I released a new print available through Fine Art America. This painting is called The Journey Begins. It is a fantasy style picture which is a new thing for me. I am curious to hear what people think. I have lots more ideas like this. There are lots of little details to suggest a story. I have my own story but people often are inspired to invent their own.

Reproductions

I am offering reproductions of my paintings now. Through Fine Art America you can get high quality prints, posters and cards. Check out my shop.
I have resisted for years getting into reproductions. I thought my prices for originals were pretty affordable. Why not buy an original? Now my prices are creeping up. Some pieces are very large and the prices are prohibitive for some. The first piece I am offering is Hosoi Vans. I have had a lot interest in this piece. I love the 80's nostalgia in this piece and now you can choose the size you want if you love it too.

I will have a block print in a show of the Artists of Zyzzyva at Mina Dresden Gallery in San Francisco. The show is to honor Howard Junker who will be celebrating 25 years as editor. I wish I could go to the opening but I won't be able to be there. If any readers get to visit, I would love to hear about it.

Bella Perla to Brian Marki

My solo show at Bella Perla is over. Since the owner of Bella Perla, Julie Martin, is going to sell the gallery as soon as she finds a buyer, I decided to look for another gallery. I am happy to announce that I found a new home in Portland. I contacted Brian Marki to tell him about my impending transition to a new gallery and see if he was interested in my work for his gallery. He is! I already dropped off a couple pieces. There is a group show planned for May.
